{"id":8414,"date":"2023-11-02T07:03:53","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T07:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lhm-instrumentation.eu\/?p=8414"},"modified":"2023-11-16T09:47:18","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T09:47:18","slug":"what-is-true-rms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lhm-instrumentation.eu\/en\/kenniscentrum\/algemeen\/wat-is-true-rms\/","title":{"rendered":"What is True-RMS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid vc_row-o-content-middle vc_row-flex\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>A\u00a0<strong>true-RMS<\/strong>-device (RMS = Root Mean Square) is one of three instruments used to calculate alternating current (AC) or AC voltage:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lhm-instrumentation.eu\/en\/products\/hvac\/multimeters\/\">True-RMS digital multimeter<\/a>\u00a0(or clamp meter)<\/li>\n<li>Medium-response true-RMS digital multimeter (or clamp meter)<\/li>\n<li>Oscilloscope<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Only the first two instruments are commonly used and both can measure accurate standard (pure AC) sinusoidal waveforms.<\/p>\n<p>This does not alter the fact that a <a href=\"https:\/\/lhm-instrumentation.eu\/en\/product\/fluke-280-series-multimeters-with-data-logging\/\">true-RMS meter<\/a> is widely preferred because only it can measure both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal AC waveforms. (See the illustrations at the top of the page.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sinusoidal (sine) waves<\/strong>: Clean, without distortion, with symmetrical transitions between peaks and troughs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-sinusoidal waves<\/strong>: Waves with distorted, irregular pattern ejections, pulse trains, squares, triangles, sawtooth shapes and other ragged or angular shapes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Is True-RMS And Why Is It So Important?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PHixK2d_uZU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 64px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h4>Calculate RMS<\/h4>\n<p>As mentioned earlier,\u00a0<strong>RMS for Root Mean Square.<\/strong>\u00a0Although understanding this formula can be challenging, RMS basically calculates\u00a0<strong>the equivalent direct current value of an AC waveform<\/strong>. In more technical terms, it determines the \u2018effective\u2019 or DC heating value of any AC waveform.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>meter for average values<\/strong>\u00a0uses mathematical formulas to average for accurate measurement of pure sine waves. It can measure non-sinusoidal waves, but with uncertain accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>One more <a href=\"https:\/\/lhm-instrumentation.eu\/en\/product\/fluke-80-series-v-digital-multimeters-digital-multimeter\/\">advanced\u00a0<strong>true-RMS meter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0can accurately measure pure waves and the more complex non-sinusoidal waves. Waveforms can be distorted by non-linear loads, such as frequency-controlled drives or computers. Some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Frequency-controlled motor drives<\/li>\n<li>Electronic ballasts<\/li>\n<li>Computers<\/li>\n<li>HVAC<\/li>\n<li>Semiconductor environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In these environments, current is present in short pulses instead of the smooth sine waves drawn by a standard induction motor. The waveform of the current can have a great effect on the readout of current clamps. In addition, a true-RMS meter is a better choice for making measurements on electrical lines where AC characteristics are not known.<\/p>\n<p>Reference: Digital Multimeter Principles by Glen A.
